National ID cards were first introduced at the outbreak of the first world war, and remained a fact of British life until well after the end of the second world war. Some civil rights campaigners are not happy that the Government may bring about a return of ID cards, but given the worrying times we live in it’s easy to see why ID cards are seen as a solution to the threat of terrorism and other crimes.
It’s not clear whether or not ID cards will be reintroduced but if they are, the chances are that we will all take them for granted after a while.
