Cotag cards and fobs are available in a range of different types of encoding and it’s vital to make sure that you get the correct one for your system, otherwise it won’t work. The actual form-factor of the token doesn’t matter, different types of Cotag cards and fobs are designed to work simultaneously on the same system, it’s the encoding that’s important.
Standard or Bewator encoding (part numbers beginning with IB) is the most common and simplest form of encoding. The tokens come pre-encoded and all you have to do is enrol them on your system.
Distributor specific encoding. Different distributors of access control equipment are issued with specific encoding ranges that can be applied on request to Cotag tokens. This means that if you originally bought your tokens from a specific supplier, they may have to always come from them. This is by no means certain though, so it’s always worth asking.
Some people buy the tokens completely un-encoded (part numbers beginning with 0) and then encode them with whatever they need for their system. To do this, you have to have your own suitable Cotag encoder. This approach isn’t recommended unless you know what you’re doing.

Cotag, formerly owned by Bewator, now part of Siemens Building Technology, are a very common brand of access control equipment in the UK and something that we help people with on a regular basis.
Very often we are contacted by people who have previously been getting their Cotag cards or fobs from their access control company but who are concerned that they might be paying too much from them, or that they are not getting the speed of delivery and service that they require.
ID Management Systems can supply the majority of different credentials for Cotag systems, including cards and fobs. Often it’s possible for us to identify exactly what is needed for a system from a chat over the phone, other times we might need you to send us a picture of you existing fobs. If in doubt, it’s best to send us a functioning sample of what you’re already using and we’ll analyse it and tell you what you need.

Access control systems are very common. Lots of people find themselves using them on a daily basis, both at work and home. As far as the average person is concerned it’s the kind of technology that needs to just work without them ever having to question what it’s doing.
With so many different manufacturers like HID, PAC, Paxton and Cotag involved and so many different types of cards and fobs, finding the right token for your access control system can be a difficult proposition. It’s not a good idea to guess either, it’s very easy to end up with something that simply won’t work with your system.
Here at ID Management Systems we specialise in access tokens for a huge range of different access control equipment. Often we are able to identify a token simply by its physical appearance and any numbers on it, but if we can’t be certain it’s usually the best idea to send us one and we’ll have it analysed and tell you exactly what it is, so you can get what you need without having to worry about it working.

As well as the standard cards and fobs various manufacturers make different and more unusual types of access control credentials. They all do fundamentally the same thing, though some of them are specialised for a specific job.
Vehicle passes – designed to automatically let vehicles through access controlled gates, these are much bigger than normal access cards and have a built-in battery to boost the transmission range. A standard card has a range of just a few centimetres but this is obviously unsuitable for a vehicle where a range of several metres is necessary.
Self-adhesive discs – these small stickers are designed to unobtrusively attach to standard cards, allowing existing ID cards to be used with an access control system.
Watchprox – from Paxton Access, these small tokens are made as part of a cable-tie that attached to the user’s watch-strap, allowing them to have their access control token readily available at all times. The unit is tiny and hard to notice when it’s in place.
This is just a sample of the novel types of access control credential that are available. If you would like to find out more about these or any other access control equipment, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

A lot of people don’t use cards for their access control system, either because they don’t need photographic ID to be part of it or because it would be simply inconvenient. One of the most popular alternatives is fobs. These are small and plastic and vary in shape and colour between different manufacturers. They are usually designed so that they can be attached to something like a key-ring and offer a handy way for people to operate their access control system.
They are increasingly becoming popular for people outside of the work environment. A lot of blocks of flats use fob-based access control systems to enter the main door and then a normal key to get into the individual flats.
They use exactly the same technology as proximity cards and it’s not unusual for people to have a system that uses both concurrently, allowing individual users to have the device that best suits their situation.
Here at ID Management Systems, we supply fobs by a range of different manufacturers, including HID, Paxton and Cotag. Call us on 0800 408 1471 if you’d like to find out more.
