We work with a very large number of small companies, the kinds of organisations that might only employ a few people. There are more than 1.5 million SMEs in the UK and they represent the majority of the UK business and employ about 10 million people. These are companies that employ less than 250 people, many of them 10 or less.
Increasingly smaller companies are feeling the need for ID cards for their staff, but if you only employ 10 people, do you really want to have to buy your own plastic card printer? Printers can be expensive and if you’re only looking to produce a very small number of cards, it might not seem like the best use of funds, leading to some companies trying to cut corners and produce their own low quality laminated paper cards, which don’t last very well or look professional.
Fortunately, with our ID card bureau service we can produce high-quality printed plastic cards in whatever volume you need, so even if your business only needs a couple of cards, that’s fine, ID Management Systems can help. If you’d like to find out more about getting plastic ID cards for your business, call us on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

We’ve talked about a few of the different kinds of ribbons that are used in plastic card printers, ribbons that include standard YMCKO colour ribbons, YMCKOK ribbons for double-sided printing, mono colour ribbons and metallic foil ribbons.
Some of the major manufacturers of plastic card printers like Fargo, Evolis and Magicard also produce more specialist types of ribbons for our printers, including ribbons that use fluorescent print for adding extra security features that can only be seen under UV light; ribbons for printing scratch-off panels for covering numbers on things like gift and phone cards and holographic overlay panels that are designed to add an extra layer of security to ID cards.
If you’d like to find out more about plastic card printers or any of the other products that we supply, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471.

As well as YMCKO, YMCKOK and monochrome ribbons, many of the makers of plastic card printers also offer other types of ribbons.
A popular choice is metallic foil ribbons. These ribbons print solid-coloured metallic silver or gold foil onto the surface of plastic cards. They’re not really intended for you to print the entirety of your plastic cards with, but they can be very useful for creating novel business cards, stylish membership cards, or just as an easy way to add a little something extra to your standard colour-printed plastic cards, like printing your logo as a foil-print. This can also be a good way of making your cards a bit more secure, without having to pay the costs associated with producing custom HoloDesign cards.
Of course, not all plastic card printers can use metallic ribbons, but some of the most popular machines, like the Evolis Pebble and the Magicard Rio Pro can.
If you’d like to find out more about getting ribbons for your plastic card printer, or any of the other products that we supply, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

The majority of plastic ID cards are printed in full colour and include things like photos, but not every card has to have a photo, or printed in full colour. Most manufacturers of plastic card printers supply a range of different monochrome ribbons as well as the usual YMCKO and YMCKOK ribbon. These ribbons are of a single colour, most commonly black, but you some manufacturers also supply monochrome ribbons in other colours like blue, red and green.
Monochrome black ribbons can be very useful for back-printing the reverse of cards cheaply. Often, the reverse of a card especially doesn’t need to be printed in full colour to do everything that it needs to, so why not just print in black and save money?
If you’d like to find out more about monochrome ribbons or any of the other products that we supply, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

If you have a double-sided plastic card printer like an Evolis Dualys or a Magicard Rio Pro Duo Pro then you can use the standard YMCKO ribbons if you want to print in full colour to both sides of each cards, but you should remember that you’ll get through your ribbons twice as fast as if you were only printing to one side of each card.
Not all card designs need to be printed in full colour to both sides. It’s common for people to only want to print in black for the reverse of their cards, generally because it’s an easy way of saving some money on each card. If this appeals to you, use YMCKOK ribbons. These are like the standard YMCKO colour ribbons, but they have an extra panel of resin black which is used to print the back of the cards. These ribbons can work out substantially cheaper than printing using up two sets of YMCKO ribbon for reach card.

Once you’ve made sure that you’re looking at the right ribbons for your make and model of printer, you should next figure out which of the compatible ribbons for it that you need for the kind of printing that you want to do.
The most common ribbon for plastic card printers is generally known as YMCKO, which is an abbreviation for the different panels that make up the ribbon, yellow, magenta, cyan, black and overlay. The three coloured panels can be combined to make pretty much any colour that you need. The black panel is used for producing clear black text, barcodes and the like. The overlay panel is a clear varnish layer that is added at the end of the printing to seal the card and help to protect the print from UV light and physical damage.
Of course, YMCKO is just one of the types of ribbons that are available for plastic card printers. We’ll talk more about the others later.

We’ve already established that it’s important to pick the right ribbons for your plastic card printer, Evolis need Evolis ribbons, Magicard need Magicard ribbons, and so on. Different models by different manufacturers also often use unique ribbons. An Evolis Zenius and an Evolis Pebble don’t use the same ribbons, for example. Occasionally you might find that multiple models within the same range can use the same ribbons, but it’s still best to be sure.
When you’ve made sure that you know what the ribbons are for your machine, it’s also important to figure out which of the available ribbons is the one that you want. Card printer ribbons come in many different types, all intended for a different sort of printing and what you want to do will help you establish what ribbon you will need to do it. We’ll go into more detail about the different types of ribbons later.
In the mean-time, if you need help figuring out what ribbons you need for your plastic card printer, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

Plastic card printers use printer ribbons as their main consumable. These are rolls of thin plastic film that move between two spools as they are used up. Sometimes the spools are separate, other times they are made as part of a cartridge. There are a lot of different ribbons available and it is very important to make sure you get the right one.
Ribbons are specific to printers and manufacturers. With only very few exceptions, ribbons for one manufacturer’s printer won’t work with another. The only time this might not be the case is when one manufacturer’s printer are rebranded and sold under another name. At any rate, there’s no point guessing and hoping for the best. Assume you need to make sure you get the right brand of ribbon for your printer because you won’t get very far trying to fit a Datacard ribbon into an Evolis printer.
There’s more to think about than just getting the right brand of plastic card printer ribbon, but it’s a good start. If you’d like advice on what the correct ribbon is for your printer, call ID Management Systems on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.
