ID cards aren’t just for big companies anymore

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

When ID Management Systems was founded, more than fifteen years ago, most of our customers were big companies and public sector organisations. The equipment was mostly very expensive and technical to use and it just wasn’t practical for most people to think about producing their own plastic ID cards.

Times have changed. We’re dealing with more and more smaller companies, with everyone from electricians to cleaners needing ID cards. The cost of the technology has reduced considerably, we now supply more and more high quality plastic ID card printers that cost under £1,000 make it easier for smaller companies to get the equipment that they need to produce their own ID cards for their staff and contractors.

Small companies can’t afford to have a dedicated ID card production department in the way that larger companies can, but that’s fine too. ID Management Systems make it our priority to offer all the support and advice that you’ll need to get the right system in place and producing ID cards for your staff. If you’d like to find out more, please call us on 0800 408 1471 and we’ll be happy to help.

Plastic ID cards for staff visiting the public at home

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

People are understandably loath to let anyone into their homes without them first proving their identity, so if you or anyone working on your behalf ever have to visit members of the public in their homes, a good quality plastic ID card with a photo on it is pretty much essential.

It’s normal practise to check the credentials of anyone before allowing them into your home. It’s just good sense to do so. After all, it’s very easy for someone to say that they have a right to be there, but can you afford to take the chance and just believe them without checking?

There’s a huge number of different roles that require people to visit members of the public in their own homes. This can include anything from trades-people like electricians and plumbers, meter readers, direct sales staff, collection agents, delivery staff, social workers and many other people.

As well as any corporate branding that you may have on vehicles and peoples’ uniforms, making sure that all your representatives have their verifiable credentials with them at all times in the form or a good quality plastic ID card with their details and yours on it can help people to feel safe and you to be confident that your reputation can’t be damaged by people impersonating your staff.

Please call ID Management Systems on 0870 841 3000 if you’d like to find out more or discuss your requirements.

What kind of things can you put on a plastic ID card?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

There are lots of different possibilities for design for a plastic ID card. The most obvious information to include would be things like the name, job title and a photo of the person that the ID card is for. You’ll also almost certainly want to have your company logo, name and information on it.

Photos can be imported into software from digital photos that you already have, but when you’re making plastic ID cards for a lot of people we find that it can be simpler to use a webcam and import the photos using live image capture, that we you can just take the photo as you need it and have it show up in your software straight away, ready for printing.

If you’re dealing with physical photos rather than digital images, we find that the easiest way of importing them is to use a specific passport photo scanner. You could always use a regular flatbed scanner, but it can be very time consuming.

We also sometimes use our passport photo scanners as an easy way of adding signatures to cards when they’re required. The other options for adding signatures would be to use a graphics tablet where the person just signs their name using a stylus and it is recorded, or to just use cards that have a signature panel on them. A signature panel is a strip of printed material that’s designed to be suitable to write on for normal pens, like on the back of your bank cards.

The cheapest part of any card printing solution, people often neglect the quality of the blank cards that they use in their card printer. Saving a few pennies here can potentially drastically reduce the quality of printing you get and even damage your printer. Here at ID Management Systems, we only supply genuine Fotodek™ branded cards, available in a wide range of specifications and grades to suit every application.

Our standard card is the Fotodek™ Premier CR80 760micron card in 100% PVC. This cards are excellent quality and suitable for a diverse range of users. These cards are also available with magnetic stripes, both Lo-Co and Hi-Co and can be pre-printed to your specification. They are even available in a range of different colours. While 760 micron cards are the most popular, you can also buy them in 250, 480 and even 1,000 microns.

For people that use smart and access cards, a popular choice is our Fotodek™ Self-Adhesive cards. These cards print like normal, but they have a peel-off backing that allows them to be attached to many different technology cards, potentially saving you the money of having to issue a unique new card to each employee. Some older clam-shell type proximity cards also can’t be directly printed on, so self-adhesive cards represent the best option for individualisation.

While PVC (poly-vinyl chloride) is the most popular material for ID cards, offering as it does an excellent balance between economy, printability and durability, we can also offer cards made from different plastics, including PVC with a 40% PET (polyester) core to make them more able to stand demanding environments and new 100% PET cards intended to survive the most damaging of situations. New this year we can also offer cards manufactured from BioPVC, which is a special type of plastic that is designed to be completely biodegradable.

Life Is Easier With ID Cards

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

National ID cards were first introduced at the outbreak of the first world war, and remained a fact of British life until well after the end of the second world war. Some civil rights campaigners are not happy that the Government may bring about a return of ID cards, but given the worrying times we live in it’s easy to see why ID cards are seen as a solution to the threat of terrorism and other crimes.

It’s not clear whether or not ID cards will be reintroduced but if they are, the chances are that we will all take them for granted after a while. The worry for some is that this is another step in the direction of living in a controlled society, but when you look around at how many plastic cards we use these days, it makes sense to have a universal ID card which will make life a lot easier. Think of how many forms of ID you have to present when you open a bank account. If national ID cards are introduced, this is the only form of ID you will need.

Here at ID Management Systems we are well used to dealing with plastic cards of all types. We specialise in giving our customers who need ID systems the best advice and back up available, whether that is ID card printers, pre printed cards card printer accessories or biodegradable PVC cards.

Benefits Of National ID Cards

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The debate about whether or not we should have national ID cards in Britain is never far from the headlines. It seems that a week doesn’t go by without somebody claiming that ID cards will be an infringement on our human rights, but when you look at the argument put forward by those who back the campaign to bring ID cards to the UK, it is hard to disagree with it.

Once the ID systems are set up and the card printers are churning out millions of ID cards it will make life easier in many areas. For example, ID cards will be a universal and simple proof of identity which will be convenient for organisations and individuals. This will also bring an end to having to find several different documents to prove your identity. Those who support the campaign also point out that holding ID cards will give you control over who is allowed to see your personal details as you will no longer have to give details of your finances and personal life just to prove who you are and where you live.

ID cards are a way of ensuring that foreign nationals living, working and studying in Britain legally are able to easily prove their identity and prevent those who are here illegally from benefiting from the privileges of Britain.
