We supply a lot of different types of accessories for plastic ID cards and they all come in handy for different applications. Probably the most popular are simple open-faced plastic badge holders, standard lanyards and locking nylon strap clips, they’re all very durable, easy to use and economical, but we know that just because they’re popular doesn’t mean they’re right for everyone, so we have lots of alternatives available.
For people who use proximity or mag-stripe cards regularly and need to make sure that their card is easy to get to at all times, yoyos can be a good choice. These small metal or plastic retractable reels clip onto the user’s clothing and hold the ID card close, but stretch easily to reach a door reader.

As well as the most common card holders and lanyards used by the majority of people that need to display IDs on a day to day basis, here at ID Management Systems we also offer a wide range of alternatives to those for whom lanyards may be unsuitable.
Strap clips are popular and cheap alternative to lanyards. Usually they consist of a plastic strap which attaches onto the top of a badge holder and a metal retaining clip that attaches to the user’s clothes. Strap clips are also often favoured for displaying visitor’s passes.
Another simple alternative to lanyards are bead chains. These are made of metal or plastic and are worn around the neck similarly to lanyards. Some people prefer them aesthetically and they are also usually lighter and cheaper than lanyards. Another option, often favoured for people that use proximity or swipe cards regularly are yo-yos. These metal or plastic reels typically attach to the wearer’s belt or clothes and enable them to keep their access card safe and in easy reach. Most people that want to have plastic ID cards want them to be worn or displayed in some way. It’s normal these days for people at work, university and even school to need to keep their ID card visible at all times. As well as our bespoke lanyard service, we do offer an incredibly wide range of different lanyards, many of them held in stock and available for next day delivery. Our standard lanyards are available with either plastic or metal clips and all come with safety breakaways. Available colours include black, white, red, green, royal and navy blue, yellow and orange.
We also offer a selection of standard pre-printed lanyards, usually 15mm width printed in white. Available options include staff, visitor, contractor, security, student and NHS staff. Recently we have also expanded our range to include lanyards that have hi-vis material included in them.
These standard lanyards are often significantly cheaper than bespoke lanyards, especially on smaller quantities.

Once you’ve sorted out how you’re going to produce the actual ID cards, the next thing to think about is how people are going to use and display them. You should consider things like; are they as part of an access control system, will people need to have them visible at all times, will you have people working in an environment with specific limitations on what sort of accessories they can have, like security personnel or people who work in food production?

An ID card need not be a primitive security technology, and by incorporating a variety of features you will be able to increase the practicality and effectiveness of ID cards; engineering them to be applicable for a variety of specific requirements.
Printed Laynards
For example, it you want to ensure the portability of a card then you might consider printed lanyards, which will allow the card to hang from a wearer’s neck, thereby optimising wear-ability. Also, as the lanyards are printed, this means that you can, for example, print a company name onto the laynard.
Watermarks
If you want a surefire guard against card cloning, then you could incorporate a “watermark” onto your cards (i.e a unique mark that can’t be cloned). Lanyards are extremely popular for holding ID cards. They are visible, simple to put on, and not easily dislodged. Wearers also appreciate the fact that lanyards do not fasten the card directly to clothing, so there are no piercings or marks left in the fabric, as with pin or snap-clasp fasteners. (While magnetic badge-holders no not damage clothing either, some people dislike the slightly awkward fastening process. If the magnet is lost, the card cannot be worn. Also, some people cannot wear magnets on health grounds.)
Lanyards are usually worn around the neck, with the length adjustable to ensure the ID cards are visible whatever the wearers’ roles. For example, a seated desk-worker would have a shorter lanyard, holding the card higher, than a worker who operated standing or walking.
Lanyards are highly adaptable. Some fit around the wrist, arm, or even the waist, so that whatever the wearer’s duties, a lanyard could be the best form of card holder for them. One of the great advantages of lanyards is that multi-purpose ID cards can be scanned or swiped quickly and easily, without having to be unfastened from clothing.
The actual plastic cards or badges are attached to the lanyards by swivel hooks, alligator clips, or split rings. The best form of fastener depends on the material of the lanyard itself.
