One of the things that makes issuing and administering plastic ID cards challenging for colleges and universities is the sheer volume of cards that need to be produced within a very short space of time.
In the general run of things, only a few cards need to be produced during most of the academic year, dealing with replacements for lost cards and small numbers of people that start at unusual times. Depending on the size of the institution one or perhaps a few plastic card printers will be enough to handle this.
More than 95% of the cards that will be produced in the course of a few weeks around the new intake in the Autumn and this can often mean needing to make tens of thousands of cards, more than the normal number of printers can easily handle.
